The Bay Push in Batemans Bay, NSW, is an organisation dedicated to creating a resort destination that is user friendly for people with disabilities.
President of the Bay Push, Charles Stuart said, ‘I wanted to construct a boardwalk at a local Batemans Bay beach to permit access for children in wheelchairs and for passage of water wheelchairs which we had purchased with the aid of a grant from the Soldiers Club’.
Charles said, ‘It took volunteers just one day to construct the boardwalk, with Eurobodalla council providing the bobcat and operator’.
One of those volunteers was Bert Meyer from Replas who felt so passionate about the project that he travelled four hours and volunteered two days working on the project until it was completed.
Not only has the walkway provided improved beach access, but it has also saved more than 350,000 plastic shopping bags from going to landfill.
