The $8 million Walker Rd Sporting and Recreation Precinct is a large development in Edmonton, Qld. that provides a hub for formal sport in the southern corridor of Cairns. The facilities will eventually cater for a total of nine competitive field sports, from cricket to vigoro, athletics to oztag. There is also a considerable recreational element with open spaces for exercise, walking, cycling, and arts & cultural installations.
In selecting products for the Precinct’s fitout, Cairns Regional Council chose recycled plastic where practical, acknowledging Replas bollards and fence pickets as the best long-term solutions for this project. Recycled plastic’s durability in the face of tropical weather, and its resistance to termites are just two of the material’s benefits that council researchers established when assessing their park furniture options. The Replas bollards are used extensively for traffic control around the car parks and streetscapes, while the picket fence that surrounds the main playing oval uses over 3,900 white recycled plastic pickets.
