At Oriental Bay, Wellington, New Zealand there’s a nice rooftop spot to sit and enjoy an ice cream on a sunny capital-city day. Commonly known as the Band Rotunda for reasons of history, this open space above the well-known beachside restaurant building recently got some new seating. Well not completely new. These are the original seat frames stripped back and given new hot-dip galvanising, with bright blue recycled plastic slats used as alternatives to less-resilient timber.
It’s been decades since the true band rotunda with all its musicians’ props was put somewhere more sheltered, away from the Wellington northerly that can send salt spray to test the mettle of beachgoers and structures alike. By using superior recycled plastic slats, Wellington City Council is making a great investment for the future of this city spot that’s always popular whatever the weather.
