Waste plastic, given a new life when it was turned into outdoor furniture, has now given a brand new look to an outdoor leisure area at Lakes Entrance Secondary College. The area features four Big Benches which are made by Australian company Replas from waste plastic collected throughout the community.

Principal Kevin Dowie said the, ‘seats look great,’ adding that he is, ‘really happy with the result’. The students love using them at morning recess and also to sit and chat during their study breaks.

The College chose recycled-plastic because it is a cost effective material that will last for more than 40 years with minimal up-keep. Importantly it does not contain the harmful chemicals which may exist in timber, providing peace of mind for the school community.

Staff and students can also rest easy knowing the environmentally-friendly furniture has saved the equivalent of 29,000 two-litre milk containers from taking up 5.8 cubic metres of landfill.

The area was designed and constructed by REAL Garden Centre using Replas recycled-plastic furniture which is on display at their yard on the Princes Highway in Kalimna.
