As well as boasting a large radio telescope, Parkes in central west NSW has many recycled plastic bollards, planks signs and drinking fountains located in various places around town. In the cemetery, 125 mm bollards are used extensively to mark the lawn area, while Replas signage can be seen at a number of park sites along with more bollards fitted as drinking fountains. Parkes Shire Council likes the low-maintenance aspects and longevity of recycled plastic park furniture.

For visitors to the region, the big attraction is the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope that played an important part in communicating with voyages to the moon, and around which the movie ‘The Dish’ is based.
