Green solution for Blue Pool

Bermagui, in NSW, has two excellent tide-filled swimming pools set among the rocks—one for adults and one for children, known collectively as 'The Blue Pool'. Apart from safety and fresh salt-water, The Blue Pool also offers spectacular views of the coast.

The original staircase was very steep with uneven treads and risers and subject to weed and algal growth which presented a slip hazard to users. To overcome this problem Bega Valley Shire Council decided to fix Enduroplank™ to the top of the concrete step treads, providing greater traction. David Buckley from the council says, ‘the plastic material has proved both less prone to weed growth and much easier to remove any growth that does occur’.

There was only one small picnic table setting servicing the entire pool—an early Replas setting— which David said ‘had withstood the environment extremely well’. This was replaced with four matching Kookaburra picnic tables and bench seats.

Also replaced were the old timber slab bench seats which were narrow, deteriorating and required regular maintenance. Recycled-plastic Kookaburra bench seats now complete the picture.

'The Blue Pool at Bega, NSW, is situated on the ocean foreshore and is subject to extremes of coastal weather and coastal action. We were therefore looking for a material that would withstand these conditions in the long term and require minimal maintenance. We also wanted a product that was functional and stylish. The Replas suite of products met all these requirements.’

David Buckley Federal Infrastructure Projects Project Coordinator, BVSC.

Great minds think alike

It’s great to see Project Coordinator, Milisa Price, and Purchasing Manager, Jack Huston, see eye to eye on the facility management at Bond University. The University has installed hundreds of Replas bollards and picnic settings around the campus.

Milisa has been busy calculating how much landfill the university has prevented by using recycled-plastic materials, and how many trees have been saved by Jack’s excellent environmentally-friendly choices. Whilst Jack is impressed by the figures, he is adamant that the main reason he decided to purchase recycled-plastic products is the fact that they are virtually maintenance-free.

The new 'Slab' setting

The Slab picnic setting takes its name from its vast proportions and large slat size. It's readily available in a standard 3 metre length, seating 12 people with ease, and can be custom made up to 8 metres long.

East Gippsland Rail Trails

Just recently, Replas installed three new Lyrebird picnic settings along the East Gippsland Rail Trail (EGRT). The settings were kindly donated by members of the Friends of the EGRT Association, with the selected locations chosen carefully – all are preferred rest points used by members when pausing for a cup of tea!

New visitors are always welcome to ride the trail from Bairnsdale to Orbost. It’s a two-day cycle for those wanting to enjoy the ambience, but for those in a hurry, the 100 kilometre one-way trip can be completed in just one day.

Take a look at our latest installations!

Cairns City Council, Queensland.

The council has recently refurbished their viewing platforms and boardwalks    at Devils Hole, Boulders. After Cyclone Larry left a trail of destruction through north Queensland last year, councils and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service used long lasting Enduroplank™ to replace the destroyed timber.

Southern Grampians Shire Council, Victoria.

The Shire is committed to using recycled plastic for their outdoor furniture and bollards. The local rotary club has ordered several settings, which will be donated to the local community.

Gippsland Ports, Victoria.

Rutter’s Jetty in Gippsland has been refurbished with recycled plastic Enduroplank™ decking. The before and after photos speak for themselves. The Gippsland Ports Authority now recommends the use of Enduroplank™, as it requires very little ongoing maintenance.

Bayside City Council, Victoria.

Bayside City Council have placed 50 Trackmarker signs along the famous Beach Road, on the Port Phillip Bay. Recycled plastic was used instead of wood for many reasons – mainly because these Trackmarkers are price competitive, and will outlast the wooden alternative by many years.

Annandale State School, Queensland.

This school recently purchased recycled wheel stops and speed humps, as student safety became an issue with high levels of traffic in the area. The products have helped reduce the risk of injury, as the speed of passing cars is now reduced.

The Cathedral School of St Anne & St James, Queensland.

This school now has thirty recycled plastic tables and seats spread throughout the grounds. The school prides itself on sustainable environmental procurement; students, staff and parents all acknowledging the benefits that these products bring to the school, and committing themselves to future environmental solutions.

St. Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Queensland.

This Townsville school has created a functional break area for students to relax or study outdoors. The Big bench is a relatively new concept that many schools are now adopting, the large space allowing students to spread out their books or sit in groups. It combines a seat and table into one!

Carlyle Retirement Village, Queensland.

This retirement village is one of the largest in the area. During its development, two Kimberley seats were placed at the front of the village in a park environment, providing excellent seating for the residents to enjoy their surroundings.

Yanchep National Park, Western Australia.

For years, staff at this national park have been concerned about the materials being supplied and used in their wetland area. Recently, Replas' Enduroplank™ decking was installed for a crossover boardwalk.

The Enduroplanks™ are inert and have no issues where the environment is concerned – in fact, the council has saved many trees by using plastic that would have normally ended up in landfill.

The City of Belmont, Western Australia.

Recently, a number of Replas bollards have been installed at Faulkner Park. The local council is a great supporter of Replas products, particularly because of the substantial savings in maintenance due to the unique attributes of the plastic. They also happen to enjoy the natural look of the green bollards.

Waverley Christian College leads by example

With over 50 recycled seats, benches, tables and chess settings, Waverley Christian College in Victoria has a proud history of leading by example. Maintenance staff member David Daff purchases the products for their long lasting attributes, the first of which was installed at the school 6 years ago.

David is proud to say the product looks as good today as the day it was installed!

The extreme test

We are quite often asked about the use of recycled plastic under extreme temperatures found in many areas of Australia. Our furniture in particular has found its way into some of the most inhospitable situations, from central Australia to the snow country of the Australian Alps. Road authorities have been using our furniture in wayside stops and rest areas for many years with complete success.

These Hume settings on the Stuart Highway near Woomera in South Australia can handle the heat, whilst our Falls Creek setting at Falls Creek in Victoria stands up to the chilly winter snow.

Rolling Hills Primary School

Six Falls Creek Benches were designed to use around different tree trunks in the outdoor areas of Rolling Hills Primary School in Victoria.  The benches are a permanent shade solution for the students on hot summer days.

Rolling Hills Primary School has also purchased a Trackmarker sign that directs visitors to the School Office upon entering.

These chess tables have become very popular within schools, as they can be used for class activities and during lunchtimes.
