All ship-shape with recycled plastic seating

Cook Strait ferries in New Zealand contend with the harshest of marine conditions, and maintenance is a constant issue. So when Strait Shipping Ltd needed to refurbish seating on the outside decks of the Bluebridge ferry MV Straitsman, staff took a good look at the options before asking Replas’ New Zealand distributor Metal Art to provide the solution.

Dealing with the steel frames would be a breeze – stripping the surface coatings, regalvanising and applying a fresh new finish in the Metal Art paint shop. But the timber slats had not weathered well, and there had to be a better option. Replas recycled-plastic profiles provided the answer.

Strait Shipping chose grey 40 x 90 mm Replas slats for their refurbished Straitsman seats. Combined with the company’s blue on the frames, they look amazing. ‘Recycled plastic seating was new to us,’ says Steve Blom, Acting Marine Safety Manager, ‘and we’re very pleased with the result.’

Passengers on the Straitsman will enjoy the ship’s new seating for years to come. Unlike the timber that went before it, the recycled plastic will not split or rot, and will never need painting. Just the all-weather ticket on the Wellington – Picton run.

Long term solution for coastal access

When an existing timber beach access ramp adjacent to the Otaki Surf Lifesaving Club in New Zealand had deteriorated to the point where it was a safety hazard,  Kapiti Coast District Council needed to consider their options. KCDC Planner Stu Kilmister said, ‘We have been looking for

some time at using recycled-plastic products in our parks and elsewhere and the Otaki Beach project presented a suitable opportunity to trial the new material’s benefits.‘We could have simply replaced like with like,’ said Mr Kilmister, ‘but it is a very hard site for treated timber.’ An Enduroplank™ recycled-plastic deck from Replas proved to be the ideal solution in this harsh marine environment.

The use of recycled plastic fits well with the council’s stance on sustainability, however Mr Kilmister said, ‘any new material or process must prove its economic benefit’. Metal Art—the New Zealand distributor for Replas— worked closely with the council to ensure the project brief was met within budget.

"We will be watching the performance of the product closely over the next 12-24 months and will be looking for other opportunities to roll this product out on other beach access ways in future". Stu Kilmister, Planner, Kapti Coast District Council.

A special seat

TNC Inc. is a community based organisation promoting recreation and leisure opportunities for people with an intellectual disability, living in the Blacktown area, NSW. The centre recently installed an Evolution seat from Replas, chosen to complement their existing security screens and bicycle rack.

Overall we are really happy with the quality of the seat. I have had one attempt at graffiti but this has washed off reasonably well. When we raise further funds we will have a Replas seat made to go around our beautiful gum tree in the back yard.

Bath time for Dawn Fraser

The Dawn Fraser Baths in Balmain, Sydney, replaced the old timber fenders with recycled plastic large profiles in 2007 Apart from the fact that recycled plastic will last so much longer, the team loves how easy it is to keep clean.

Cleaning takes place monthly during full moon low tide using a scrapper and high powered pressure washer. According to Andrew Beamer, Manager, Dawn Fraser Baths the recycled plastic is, ‘Easier to clean than the material in there before. The end result is really good’.

Sorell Council: Pioneering sustainability

Inspired by an article they had seen in a previous edition of Recycled Plastic News, Sam Fenney and Wayne Mason from Sorell Council, in Tasmania,  found a novel use for our large profiles when they decided to incorporate them into a fence they were designing for the newly renovated Pioneer Park.

They wanted a solution that was sustainable, long lasting and low-maintenance, but which also looked good. The council had previously used recycled-plastic bollards, from Replas, to define walkways and garden beds in areas which have a harsh marine environment. As a re

The large profiles were mounted horizontally to achieve the striking ranch-style fence. The park was further complemented by recycled-plastic bollards along paths and flowerbeds with recycled-plastic wheel-stops used in the car parks.sult of this experience Sam and Wayne were confident that recycled plastic was the right choice for them.

'I am very impressed with Replas’ products. It is exciting to see plastic waste benefiting the community and is great to be supporting a company that is diverting waste from landfill while saving trees, energy and other natural resources’, Cr Carmel Torenius, Mayor of Sorell Council.

Green solution for Blue Pool

Bermagui, in NSW, has two excellent tide-filled swimming pools set among the rocks—one for adults and one for children, known collectively as 'The Blue Pool'. Apart from safety and fresh salt-water, The Blue Pool also offers spectacular views of the coast.

The original staircase was very steep with uneven treads and risers and subject to weed and algal growth which presented a slip hazard to users. To overcome this problem Bega Valley Shire Council decided to fix Enduroplank™ to the top of the concrete step treads, providing greater traction. David Buckley from the council says, ‘the plastic material has proved both less prone to weed growth and much easier to remove any growth that does occur’.

There was only one small picnic table setting servicing the entire pool—an early Replas setting— which David said ‘had withstood the environment extremely well’. This was replaced with four matching Kookaburra picnic tables and bench seats.

Also replaced were the old timber slab bench seats which were narrow, deteriorating and required regular maintenance. Recycled-plastic Kookaburra bench seats now complete the picture.

'The Blue Pool at Bega, NSW, is situated on the ocean foreshore and is subject to extremes of coastal weather and coastal action. We were therefore looking for a material that would withstand these conditions in the long term and require minimal maintenance. We also wanted a product that was functional and stylish. The Replas suite of products met all these requirements.’

David Buckley Federal Infrastructure Projects Project Coordinator, BVSC.

Six bridges for Twelve Apostles

BEFORE

AFTER

The Twelve Apostles car park, in Victoria, is now the site of some very innovative and sustainable bridge construction. Six timber footbridges have been transformed with the installation of recycled-plastic Enduroplank™ decking.

The new bridges, which also feature a composite fibre sub-structure, are a perfect solution in this harsh coastal environment where timber rots quickly due to the damp salty air.

Parks Victoria was particularly pleased that during their busy period at the site, it took only a short time to install these low maintenance and cost effective structures.

Partnership takes a leap forward

Once the sand was tipped in we drove the dingo over the end panels to level the sand with no problems, the panels did not move. We have used timber before and in order to bolt it into place and secure it takes a lot longer and a lot more effort to get them level and straight.’ Will Grimes, Contractor.

At Replas, we love working with people who are just as passionate as we are. Will Grimes is a contractor from WA, who is really supporting our efforts and was once again happy to work with recycled plastic when installing an edge around a long-jump pit at Hartfield Park, in the Shire of Kalamunda.

Will said even he was surprised at, ‘how quick it was to install the panels,’ needing only his 11 year-old son to help him! According to Will the best thing is that the panels have given ‘an edge with no sharp points and will not splinter—the best possible outcome’.

Dryen Australia Pty Ltd, a Victorian textile company, chose to install three Premier settings and three Kimberley ergonomic seats in an outdoor area for staff. They wanted to make their workplace more Eco friendly, but also loved the fact that the seats are strong, long lasting and require no maintenance.
