PARKS VICTORIA: Twelve Apostles footbridges
Six timber footbridges at The Twelve Apostles car park, in Victoria, were transformed with the installation of recycled-plastic Enduroplank™ decking with composite fibre sub-structure. Parks Victoria was particularly pleased that during their busy period at the site, it took only a short time to install these low maintenance and cost effective structures.

LEICHARDT MUNICIPAL COUNCIL, NSW: Dawn Fraser Baths—large profiles
The old timber fenders at The Dawn Fraser Baths were replaced in 2007 with recycled-plastic Large Profiles. Leichardt Municipal Council chose recycled plastic after an assessment of different materials demonstrated the suitability of the product.
‘The analysis was based on a 25 year period and importantly, included maintenance and replacement costs where necessary. This is an extremely harsh environment requiring a tough and versatile material. Despite a slightly higher purchase price than some of the alternatives, the recycled plastic option was the most cost effective when assessed on a full life cycle basis.’

HUTT CITY COUNCIL, NZ: wheel stops
As part of a redevelopment Hutt City Council, NZ, needed to improve its on-street car parking. They created angle parking where there had previously been wide grass berms. The new concrete parks were flush with the existing footpath, and wheel stops were an essential component of the job.
‘We wanted to use recycled plastic to fit with the council’s approach to sustainability. The yellow Replas wheel stops are ideal. We needed a strong visual differentiation to ensure separation between car park and footpath.’

NT PARKS AND WILDLIFE SERVICES: Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve—boardwalk
The existing wooden boardwalk at Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve had become unsafe due to its exposure to damp conditions. During the wet season much of it is underwater and so it required urgent replacing. Rather than replace the timber decking with more timber, the NT Parks and Wildlife Service sensibly decided to invest in a recycled-plastic boardwalk. NT Parks and Wildlife has also installed Replas bollards in the area, effectively eliminating their termite problem as recycled plastic is resistant to termites.
‘It took about 12 months to build, during the wet season when the whole place floods. The project has been so good we are actually going to continue on the other side of the boardwalk section outside the park and will probably do other sections around the top end.’

TASMANIAN PORTS CORPORATION: Kings Pier Marina—large profiles
When it came to updating the deteriorating timber at Kings Pier Marina, the Tasmanian Ports Corporation (Tasports) decided that recycled-plastic large profiles, from Replas, were the ideal choice to replace the old fenders. As the marina is a popular berthing facility, Tasports needed a product that wouldn’t detract from the natural beauty of the area.
‘We found the product easy to work with, and are impressed with the look and outcome of the installation. It’s great that the fenders are resistant to marine growth attack – this should make them last a long time.’

NGILGI CAVE, WA: boardwalk & staircase
Ngilgi Cave in Western Australia, previously had a boardwalk made of wood, but over ten years ago they decided to install a recycled-plastic boardwalk. With 50, 000 people passing through the caves each year, they needed a long-lasting solution that would be visually appealing and not detract from the cave environment.
‘The cave has a constant humidity level all year round of 98%. This means the boardwalks are generally always damp. They used to be made of wood but it was found that the wood deteriorated too quickly under the cave conditions. I would recommend the product to anyone who was after an environmentally-friendly boardwalk that is not only durable and hardwearing, but also aesthetically pleasing’.

MACKAY REGIONAL COUNCIL, QLD: Bluewater Trail—boardwalk
The 21 km Bluewater trail in Mackay, incorporates a walkway—The Pioneer Environmental Walk—which is under water four weeks of the year. As Mackay Regional Council needed a product for this part of the trail that could withstand such conditions, they chose Replas’ recycled-plastic Enduroplank™ with a composite fibre sub-structure. These products are strong, yet light and easy to install ensuring the boardwalk was constructed in record time.
‘The final appearance of the completed boardwalk is a credit to all involved. The products incorporated into the project offered a superior product over conventional methods and products used in the past.’

BEGA VALLEY SHIRE COUNCIL, NSW: The Blue Pool, Bermagui—outdoor furniture
The original staircase at The Blue Pool in Bermagui was very steep, with uneven treads and risers. It was also subject to weed and algal growth which presented a slip hazard to users. To overcome this problem Bega Valley Shire Council decided to fix Enduroplank™ to the top of the concrete step treads to provide greater traction. They also replaced old timber slab bench seats with recycled-plastic seating and installed four matching Kookaburra picnic tables.
‘The Blue Pool at Bega, NSW, is situated on the ocean foreshore and is subject to extremes of coastal weather and coastal action. We were therefore looking for a material that would withstand these conditions in the long term and require minimal maintenance. We also wanted a product that was functional and stylish. The Replas suite of products met all these requirements.’

THE CITY OF CANTERBURY, NSW: Fitness Trails
The City of Canterbury, NSW has provided the new Cooks River Fitness Trail to help make exercise equipment accessible to everyone and to encourage the community to get active.
